    Default Heartworm...yrly or Monthly?

    Hi,

I've had dogs all my life and when I was 17, I got my own dog and back then it was normal to give your dog a daily heartworm tablet. (She's now waiting for me at the Rainbow bridge).

My next dog (8 yrs later... bought when my 1st retired from obedience/agility and I started to have my own babies)....was put onto the monthly heartworm (pro heart)...he is still on this and I don't think I'll change it for him.

But I now have a pup due for her 12 week vax next week and I'm just wondering what's the GO theses days?...Is the monthly tablet still reccomended, or should I go for the yrly heartworm shot?

    TIA

Hey there id say the monthly, till your pup is at least 1 yrs, my vet recommended it only cos the shot is more potent for the puppy and puppys are known for reactions to things easily , and its safer i have always used revolution. and on the plus side it covers fleas, ticks , earmites, heartworm , round worm, sarcoptic mange.hook worm, flea larve and adult fleas iv never had a problem and it really works..

I'd say monthly for life. Although there is no real evidence that the Pro Heart injection available in Australia causes any sinister reactions I personally feel it is far safer to have only a months worth of insecticide/pesticides and or chemicals in a dogs system than 12 months worth....jus in case.

This is my thoughts too come the yrly versus monthly HW prevention. I did ask advice for the yrly vacc...but I'm happy with the monthly one I give along with the flea/worm treatment..all in one- advocate

I did the yearly shot on Maxi (at Rainbow bridge too). When she died, I went through a guilt stage and did alot of research on meds, heartworm treatment, diet. etc. I guess I just needed to blame something...
In re. heartworm-I found out that injections are more potent and can cause reactions in pups and young dogs. I'm not saying that it's what caused her illness- not at all.
But, like Anne said; I'd rather a monthly dose, then 12 months worth in one.
I give my girls monthly Advocate.

I've used both with adult Pugs and Deerhounds. Obviously you can't use the annual until the dog has reached it's adult weight. There were no ill effects in any of my dogs with the yearly shot but I am now back to using the monthly dose. I feel more comfortable with it.

Being a Collie breed, Kenna my Sheltie is on Interceptor as it contains no Ivermectin (spelling?).

I don't give Dolly heartworm treatments.
I've read your vet needs to test them for "something" before commencing them and then if they miss any it can kill them.

It all scares they hell out of me to be honest. I never feed him raw offal which is meant to be how they get it.

    monthly's all the way

it's a simple blood test pugger - theyre either positive or negative - and then they can go on the product.
