Thread: How Do You Get Your Dog to Take Pills?

Default How Do You Get Your Dog to Take Pills?

Most of the time I don't have trouble getting Ralph to take tablets. I usually hid them in treats like bits of sausage or koftas, but he is getting really smart with it. Originally used a bit of butter, put towards the back of his tongue and then held his head up until he would swallow, but this hasn't worked in ages!
Oh and putting in his dinner doesn't work either.
    Any good ideas out there?

Crunch them up and then put them in Spag Bol mince (without the onion of course). Try that and see if it works.

Our dog always knew when there was a tablet in something as well, but we found putting it in a bit of cream cheese worked wonderfully.

That sounds good cate as Ralph loves Spag Bol. Not sure how he will go with it twice a day? But will give it a go!

    Hi BOH....

please be careful with feeding cream cheese to dogs, as dogs are lactose intolerant & i found out the diarrhea way, opps my daughter made Floyd a roo & cream cheese b-day cake/ dinner... opps cream cheese doggy diarrhea all over our white carpet

I usually just feed Floyd medications with out hiding it in food
( he's a Stafford & they usually any thing / food ) but if needed i will hide pill in a tad of Vegemite.

We used to have to get a good smelly cheese up to room temp and mould it completely around the tablet so no part of the tablet could be seen... That was the only way we could get Kosmo to take pills.. Any other method/food would result in tablet being spat out... We think the strong taste and smell from the smelly cheese was enough to mask the pill !!

Thanks Deb, I will test him on a tiny bit first! Doggy diarrhea would not be too nice. Also I don't want anything else ruined at this point. Have already had lounge suite, doona and some sheets ruined due to when Ralph has had bleeding and blood cloths, so diarrhea is something we can do without. Mind you he hasn't ruined anything in the last while, but you never know when this rotten tumour might eat through another blood vessel!

Crush it up into powder and mix it through their dinner? If their nose is still too clever mix the oil from a tin of sardines into it. Can they still smell pills through the smell of sardines?
