    Default Low Cost Desexing!

    Hi..

I was wondering how much people paid for having there female dogs desexed. Our first female dog we got from the RSPCA and cost us $175 to get done..
We have recently looked into it for our second girl to get her done and have been quoted $350 this is almost double what we paid for our first girl and she is same size!

Do you have a pension/consession card? If so you can get a discount, but it can take up to 2 months as you first have to apply...then you get the discount certificate sent out to you

Now we reaally want to get her done soon but this sort of money is alot for us so does anyone know any low cost options? I am in southern NSW not far from ACT and happy to travel!!
210(M) 340(F) and 418(F) for mine, the low cost options would be an animal hospital if you have one around, if you are on the dole or an old age pensioner you could get a discount or even a state funded desexing depending on your region.

Price varies due to weight, age, type of anasthetic used, if fluids are givin or not, and if bloodwork is needed and used to evaluate organ function, ongoing pain relief, same day pick up, or overnight stay etc.

My GSD female was done at 8 months and it cost about $200.
The more people I meet, the more I like my dogs.

You could probably get a payment plan with most vets or even the rescue places if you can't afford the full price. Full price with my favourite vet in Adelaide for a female dog is just under $300 - maximum, so if it was straight forward day surgery no overnight stay or complications, then might be cheaper.

Phone a few vets - ask around your friends for ones they recommend and a few of the shelters ie Animal Welfare League as well as RSPCA and see what price and payment plan they can offer.

Also ask about the contraceptive pill - even this would be better (and cheaper) than dealing with a litter of unplanned puppies.

Hey Kelpiemum. I think ACT RSPCA have a low income desexing program if you have a health care card. You can at least ring them and if they can't do it they should be able to point you at a vet that can.

Another good vet hospital is Sonzas in Queanbeyan. They have done rescue desexing at low rates but I don't know what their standard cost is.
