Default Leo Back from the Vet This Afternoon

Leo went to the vet today, he had split a toenail last Friday, clean split, OH said it bleed quite a bit but it had stopped by the time i got home. But after running around the park has been limping a little so took him to the vet just to be sure. Vet said same, nice clean split, should grow out, he might loose the nail case bit (My words not the vets! LOL) but in eaither case just some antibotics and he should be fine.

We were also due for vaccination in 2 weeks time so got it done while we were there (His first 1 yearly 'big boy vaccine!) Oh my! The vet put it in near his shoulder blandes and Leo jumped so high and yelped and the vet jumped back! Then hmmmd and hummed saying wow, havent seen a staffy do that for at least 5 years, its usually the more petite dogs like whippets! Then put it in his bum with me and OH holding him still and Leo still let out a yelp! Gosh i felt terrible! I wanted to get this years but then question wether i will get it done yearly now or every 3 years as currently suggested and/or tire test him if/when the need. Any views here? What do you guys do?

Also has some sort of nipple rash of late which you may have seen in my replys to a previous post! (Gosh sounds like Leo is failing apart at the moment!) Vet looked at it today and said was looking just fine. Although they are still a bit try and bigger than the rest, its 2 of them which are opposite in the middle... I said to the vet he is still scratching it occasionally but i tell him not to scratch and he will generally stop... he was quite OK with them. Hope they clear up properly. I have been putting lucas paw paw ointment on them every few days aswell (Have to catch him while he's sleeping!) hwich seems to help. Any other ideas welcome!

I have a few other things/questions re the antibotics we were given but will leave it at that for now., must cook dinner, sis is stopping over 2 for some dvd returns (And im sure new dvd loans! hehe) washing up and a sooky dog. Im already buggered! (just thinking about it all after being at work, rushing through traffic to get home and rushing to the vet to make our appointment! Gosh whats that saying? A womens work is never done!? )

    Aww, thanks Hippo.

He was a big sooky boy last night, maybe felt a little unwell from him vac shot too. but back to his usual cheeky bouncy self this morning.

He only limps after he has been running around the park for 20 minutes or so, not everyday this week but only a couple of days. The vet said just keep same routine and keep him running and this will help to either wear the nail down as the split grows out or he might rip the nail casing off while he's running which would be fine too and he will grow a new one back. He'll be ok the silly bugger!

Awww, big cuddles to Leo. A little pain for a lot of protection though.

My Boof ripped his claw out one day. I cam home and found blood all over the yard and just about died of a million heart attacks before I discovered it was his toenail. They had to knock him out and remove it.

aww big hugs to poor Leo, i so hope he's toe nail heals asap

I know exactly how you feel & how hard it is try & keep them from running around as Floyd has had a toe nail mishap

...Well at least he didn't do loonie Floyd's trick & twist he's nail completely upside down, Floyd's nail bled like crazy & i sure panicked, so off in a mad rush to vet we go & he had be knocked out to remove nail, was giving pain relief tablets & antibiotics, that was a few months ago & nail is growing back nicely

It's got me beat how the bugga Floyd's nail twisted upside down, he was howling so bloody loudly & in so much pain, poor boy, i was crying with him out of sympathy

There is a lot of debate about this. My opinion is> if your dog goes out with you anywhere and everywhere (and especially kennels, offleash parks, obedience etc)...it is best to keep up to date with their vaxx.
When Jess got old and didn't want to go out much anymore..and Falcon was ALWAYS at home...we did the vaxx every 3 yrs.
Even though Falcon doesn't go out like Candy does...he will still be vaxx'd yrly now as Candy could easily bring parvo home from her outings...as I could on my shoes after constanly trodding in dog poop the bad owners just leave..grrrr

    Thanks so much guys!

Anne/AF- Thats what i was worried about, thought it might have needed to be completly removed! Thankfully not, vet said it was still very well stuck but looked like the nail has split along the quick so should just grow some more tissue out from the quick and re-attach itself or otherwise the outer nail case will eventually come off if not as it 'dies' (If that makes sense, he was drawing us lovely pictures to explain, hehe) And EKKK at that pic AF! That looks VERY painful indeed!

OH said to me he couldnt beleive how much blood there was! But he is a drama queen when it comes to blood! LOL he usually actually faints at the sight of human blood so was just proud of him for managing it without hitting the deck!

Thanks OM Leo goes to dog parks almost daily, so that really my biggest worry. And swims in the duck pond on the weekends too. Hmmmmm, have another year now to think about this one at least! LOL think will keep researching more but yeah, im kinda eering on the side of caution at the moment simply as he is such a social and active boy. But then my OH's parents owned last family dog for 20years who was never given a vaccine after hes first 3 puppy shot and lived for 20 human years! Its so hard, you just want whats best for your babys.

Leo wouldnt even take a treat off the vet yesterday after he gave him the needle! so odd for Leo to refuse food, i think he was pretty unhappy with the vet! LOL when the vet went to pat him on the head as we left Leo pulled his head away and i swear i saw him shooting the vet this evil look! They're so funny!

    Poor little guy!
big hugs and kisses to Leo
Misi & Lola hope your nail heals quickly

It's a hard one in re. to vaccs, but i do it yearly - I also know people who don't bother and have dogs that are 17, 18. Don't want the girls catching something from other dogs or like Ozeymum said i'm too scared to bring something on my shoes too.

Leo's so funny! Giving evil looks to the vet. Misi stares into space, it's like she freezes. Never accepts a treat-anywhere else she'd have a bucket load and still want more and she shakes in the waiting room. oh, and she won't show pain...it's really annoying as she normally has to have extra tests for that reason.

    Update

Leo finished all his antibiotics now. Yesterday i came home and he has ripped the outer casing off the nail now. (Like vet said may happen) It looked pretty raw poor boy but he was walking on it fine, just being a bit more carefull with that foot (He slammed it ontop of a cardboard box as he was ripping it apart and i saw him lift that foot back up with a bit of an ooooo ouch and softly put it down again and went on using his other foot to hold the box still... so obviously a little tender still) Not great pics, taken on teh mobile but its usually a black nail on that toe, you can see below its not black anymore cuase that bit has been ripped off, now to wait for new nail to grow back!
