Default Do You Give Your Dog Fish Oil ?

A few months ago the vet said Chloe should have 2 fish oil capsules per day...went on about how wonderful they were. I have never given any of my dogs fish oil ever before.

So thinking the vet must know better I started giving both Rex one cap per day and Chloe two caps per day...in another thread Hycinth asked do I supplement with vitamin E...as the vet never mentioned this.

So I did some research only to find fish oil can be dangerous stuff...next thing I know both Rex and Chloe have Diarrhoea and since I haven't changed their diet...it must be this bloody fish oil...which I stopped immediately and no more Diarrhoea.

My dogs are given three tins of sardines per week which has fish oil in it and both the sardines and kibble have omega 3&6 so why give them fish oil caps that can be harmful just because the vet says so.

I give my elbow dysplasic dog and one other dog 1* 2000 mg capsule every other day day with no problems. I have never got a bad reaction to fish oil before. There is a vitamin E supplement in the Black Hawk and commercial BARF I feed them.

Really it comes down to what works for your dog. There is a supplement specifically for animals called Omega Magic plus. This contains essential fatty oils from fish, flaxseed, evening primrose etc and also has vit A, E, B and zinc etc supplements in the formula. I will probably start using this again.

I have also just started using a supplement call Canine Rose Hip Vital on several of my dogs.

I used to give them to one of mine. Your post prompts me to start again. No problems with mine either. It also reminds me I have been slack with the sardines. All will have some tonight.

You can try linseed oil instead. Its very rich in omega 3 oils.
And probably a lot cheaper than fish oil capsules.

Apart from Chloe's ear problem which I doubt fish oil is going to fix... she is young and has a nice shiny coat. I give them canola oil every few days but that's it...I don't believe in giving supplements of any kind when they don't need them...as there are enough in the kibble we give them now.

We see on TV all the time these Vitamin companys trying to push their products onto healthy people just to make money...which is what it's all about...why do you need vitamins when you don't feel sick...we don't ...so why give them to our dogs.

Linseed oil as used in wood working - possibly not good for dogs - it's similar to turps. I used to put it on my hockey stick.

Linseed oil currently sold as flax seed oil food grade - kept in refrigerator - is probably ok. My mum used to make salad dressing for us out of it. I prefer olive oil.

OK this might be a dumb ass question but is fish oil the same as cod liver oil ? Oils aint oils ? Too comfortably numb to google it.
My mate had brilliant results using cod liver oil on his Ridgeback. Best coat i've ever seen on a dog. Silky smooth !!!

no idea sean. Except mum used to make us kids eat a spoonful of cod liver oil when we were little. I think I liked the taste of it but I was always a bit odd that way.

No not a dumb ass question, I was wondering the same however I think that Cod liver oil is primarily a concentrated source of vitamin D as I understand it. I would imagine it has omega fatty acids in it as well, but it is probably cheaper to extract fish oil in bulk from the whole fish and leave the liver as a source if vit D.

As a kid my mother used to dose us up with a spoonful of cod liver oil and malt.
