    Default heart disease and ivdd

has anyone had a senior dog with advanced heart disease and ivdd?

our 12 year old was diagnosed with advanced heart disease about 7 months ago and was travelling well on meds until 2 days ago she began to lose her ability to walk, and is currently still in the vets completely paralysed on the back end. vets suggest surgery with a 90% survival rate and a 95% success rate.

We are thinking the alternative of using a wheel chair and having her in 24/7 palative care with us to live out her last days with her heart condition. We want what is best for her and what will give her the best quality of life. She has had one operation in her younger years for her teeth and did not recover well from that, so we are not confident she will make it through this one and recovery with her heart condition.

    welcome Belle and Chika

Sorry to read your dog is unwell. 12 years old can be a bit risky depending on the chances of good quality of life after. It depends a bit on what kind of dog - some last longer than others.

A friend had her cavalier king Charles spaniel in surgery with a heart condition and he came though ok - but he's not very old.

Also whatever happened last time that didn't go well - maybe things have changed? Or they could use a different anaesthetic or something?

And I also know of two dogs that recently had major problems walking - ie neither could walk and both got better on their own with care and rest at home. There was a third - a golden retriever - whose story of being paralyzed, the vets not knowing what to do and just getting better - is in here somewhere. Somewhere really with a hard to find title like a thread about travelling OS.

I don't know what ivdd is.
