    Default Meika is sick :(

Meika is very sick... I took her to the park on Thursday and she was happily chasing her ball and nothing was wrong at all, we got home about 5pm and an hour later my partner got home from work. Meika jumped on him and yelped, we gave her a quick check over but couldn't find anything wrong so we didn't think much of it. I gave her and Molly their dinners about 6:30 but went back inside so I'm not sure if Meika ate hers or if Molly cleaned it up. At 8:30 we bought her inside and as she ran in the door, she was yelping and yelping, I gave her a feel over again and she was fine until I touched the side of her jaw/throat (she yelped again), we gave her some roast chicken to see if she would eat and she tried to eat it but was absolutely screaming when trying to swallow it. I called he emergency after hours vet and he met me at the surgery, checked her over there and she was completely fine, not any yelping at all, he thought I was an absolute panicked idiot who brought my perfectly healthy dog into the vet after hours. He said maybe she had something stuck in her throat (bone, stick etc) and it dislodged when she ate the chicken but even that was unlikely because usually when they have something stuck, it's the priority and they wont try and eat.

Yesterday (Friday) she seemed fine and happy, she was quite bloated and constipated (weighed in at 14.8kg and she's usually around 13.5kg) but she wasn't sore to touch or anything. This morning (Saturday) I woke up around 7 and went to get her from the garage (where she sleeps) the garage floor was covered in diarrhoea, Meika was covered in diarrhoea and she was lying on the ground (she usually sleeps on an old couch) and couldn't get up. I was calling her and she would sit up with her front legs but wasn't able to move her back legs, they were shaking but just wouldn't do what she wanted. I lifted her up and she was able to stand on her legs and walk slowly. If she's standing on all 4 legs and you lift a back leg, she will collapse, so her legs are very weak.

We took her to the vet as soon as they opened at 8 but again, the vet couldn't find anything wrong. She took a faecal sample and there was nothing nasty on the slide, Meika wasn't sore to palpate her abdomen, the only thing the vet could find wrong was that the lymph nodes in her throat were swollen...

She gave us some antibiotics and metacam (anti-inflammatories) to give her for the lymph nodes and just in case she swallowed something that scratched/hurt her throat. If she's not feeling better by Monday we will have to go in for X-rays and maybe even do a barium test (make her swallow a little thing that takes photos of her insides).

So we still have no reason for why she has diarrhoea or can't stand up on her own.. any ideas? It has a clinic full of vets and nurses absolutely stumped.

I got a video of her trying to stand up to show the vet...

I am so sorry for you all and the poor little girl.
I never never seen anything like this in my dogs so have no ideas or advice to give.
Can only send you hugs for a speedy recovery/diagnosis.

    Aww your poor baby.
It's a horrible feeling when you don't know what's wrong with them. Fingers crossed she comes good.
Wishing you both the best of luck.

Poor little Meika and you too, I wish I could help you out here but have no idea. Hoping the vet finds the cause and cure very, very soon.

Thanks everyone She is seeming a bit better tonight, I took Molly for a walk and when we got home Meika actually stood up (slowly but surely) to say hello to her. Hopefully that means the anti-inflammatories are working!

I just put her to bed and made a nice comfy place for her to sleep on the ground level so she doesn't need to jump up to couch level.

Funny you should say that Sean! Our cat also has swollen lymph nodes and is on metacam too so my partner does think its the cat's fault Doesn't explain the back leg issues or the diarrhoea though....

I'm really hoping we wake up tomorrow and she's back to normal but at the same time I would like to get X-rays or a diagnosis because "she was very sick, now she's fine but we still don't know what was wrong" just doesn't seem good enough to me. A lot of people have been suggesting paralysis tick and surprisingly neither vet mentioned that but I have checked her over like 10 times and can't find any.

Some random stabs in the dark....

Something has gone wrong with the spinal cord... slipped disk or similar has put pressure on the spinal cord so the back end doesn't work properly...

Ate something really bad - and now it's all out might start to feel better... Did you notice any lumpy bits in the diarrhea?

Frosty had mega diarrhea - one time - but I can't remember the specific cause. But she never had any trouble walking. If she ever gets the runs, she gets no food for 12 to 24 hours, and then boiled chicken and rice in small serves 3 meals breakfast lunch and dinner.

A friend's dog got the wobbly back end. Their vets couldn't figure it out either, they thought it was slipped disk but it kind of got better on its own tho she's still wobbly at the back she can walk now.

There are some diseases or viruses that give dogs (and sheep) wobbly back ends. So will a stroke.

    Dr Google suggests this
    What is Canine Myasthenia Gravis?
Not nice but it can be treated.

    Thanks Hya

Meika can stand really well this morning, she's still a bit reluctant and slower than usual but she's standing up, laying down, standing up to see what Molly is doing etc. so I'm thinking maybe she was in pain rather than being 'weak'?

She still has diarrhea but at least she can move around to go toilet on the grass.

I'm still wondering if all her symptoms are related or just an unfortunate time to get a few seperare illnesses
    - yelping when throat touched
    - yelping when swallowing
    - diarrhea
    - swollen lymph nodes in neck
    - reluctance to stand on back legs

I just can't think of anything that would cause all that?
