Default How often do you bathe your dog?

I only bathe my dog at the end of summer when no longer taking him to the beach ,his coat is shiny as and vet says there's no problem with this but my friend washes her dog ev'ry month and reckons that " i'm slack"
I've always thought that too much bathing is not good for dogs ,what do others here think?

I 'googled' anyway and found this ( among other handy info )

Shampooing dogs too often dries out their coat and removes their natural oils. Even humans would have healthier hair if we washed it less.

Short haired dogs such as Labs, Pugs, and Beagles, do not need regular bathing. These dogs do shed a lot and particularly in the spring it might be a good idea to bathe them.

Once in a blue moon unless they stink...

Although in summer we have hose sessions nearly every day and they both get drenched but it's water only , no shampoo.

I only just washed Bronx for the first time about a week ago and i have had him a few months now. I've read alot about the oil thing too and my vet agreed aswell.

If they have flea or skin issues then more often .

Usually every 6 weeks or more if I don't think of it. Mainly when she rolls in a stinky at the beach or in the bush!

    every couple of months.
I think it's more important to brush them regularly and only shampoo as needed.

Only when he is smelly (rolled in poo or dead animal) or needs a flea treatment, so maybe 3-5 times a year :P

If he is only a little dirty you can wash them with a face cloth as most dirt sticks to the top layer of hair. You don't need to wash them nearly as often as people think.
Oh my dog has mud on it's feet
Oh, my dog got a bit of mud on it while playing with that other dog
These aren't reasons to wash your dog

I know a client who gets her dog (Long haired Border Collie) professionally washed by the mobile groomer fortnightly. They had it done one time when we were minding him for a month. I spoke to the guy while he was bathing the dog and asked him about how often you should. He said fortnightly is too often but that people are lazy and don't want to brush/wipe dirt off their dogs and it's easier to just call the groomer. And as a grooming business, you don't want to lose a client because you disagree with their grooming frequency.

I'd be surprised if they're aren't people out there that never wash their dog, just let it wash itself in ponds, beach, etc.

Riley definitely gets a bath - once a year - near or on his birthday every year - and - yes we are not 'English' ! I do this because that is when he has to see the vet for his yearly vaccinations and general check over ! I would hate to think that the vet thought that he never got bathed !

The other times of the year depends on what he finds in the yard to use as his 'perfume' for the day ! If I can smell him from a fair way away - then he gets a bath !

As 'Sean' said with his two - if they stink - they get a bath !

I bath Koda probably every 6 to 8 weeks, It really helps me to manage his coat in winter and he tends to get that "doggy" smell really fast.
Believe it or not Dodge has only been bathed twice in her lifetime... she's 8 years old She really hates getting bathed
the first time was when she got some mysterious dark brown oily substance all over her, i still dont know what it was!
Second time was when a friend of mine gave me a box of colour enhancing shampoo for black and grey dogs and i wanted to test it out.
I actually really enjoy bathing dogs surprisingly enough I often bath family and friends dogs for them!

only if they are smelly, usually

But we've been having flea issues lately, so i've been washing them weekly in a desperate attempt to get rid of them (frontline was ordered today and should be here in a couple of days, YAY!)

Once a week! Being an indoor dog & sleeping on my bed, i wouldn't be too happy with a once a month wash. I hate the feeling of the sea water sitting on your skin, & thats what molly's fur feels like after swimming in the ocean so she gets a bath straight after. Her fur actually holds alot of dirt even though i brush twice daily if i leave her for a fortnight her fur feels grotty. Rex is the complete opposite, he gets one once a month & even then the water is still clear when he gets out. Out pitts & cattle dog we never washed, thats what the river was for. Depends on your breed really, most short coats are fine with just a brush.
