Question Need advice on Bella's bum :-)

    Hi all,

My Papillion had her anal glands emptied 2 weeks ago (she is a rescue and I've had her for a year) , this was only the second time since I've had her that she has need this, anyway....they were emptied a week later she is scooting again, back to the vet I go and she says it looks like a pollen allergy....so she gives me cortisone cream to put on her bum for a week.
A few days after the week she is scooting again!!!
ANyway when I was putting the cream on her bum is just all fur even though the vet shaved it for me so I was just putting on cream really over fur....today when walking her I noticed when her tail was up I could see actually skin not just fur so now I am thinking everytime I have gone to put the cream on she is clenching her butt so obviously the cream is not going to where is supposed too ugh , my question is, how to I get her to relax her butt so the cream actually goes on where it is supposed to?
I hope this all makes sense
    Thanks!!

Cotton bud? Not to make her relax, but to get the cream on.

Can you try adding some psyllium to her diet? It can help relieve the glands as it comes out the other end.

    Do it when she's asleep??

Is it definitely a pollen allergy?

You might want to buy some disposable gloves or use those dog poo pickup bags over your hand if you don't want to touch your dog there.

It is allergy season. I try to stop my dog from napping or crawling on the grass at this time of the year or she gets a horrible rash on her tummy.

If you're not feeding her any grains - maybe feed her some raw carrot (for a papillion - start with a quarter of a large carrot?) to help the anal glands get expressed normally with extra fibre.

Another reason dogs scoot - is worms. Has she been wormed recently (or in the last 3 months)?

And itchy bum from allergies or excess hair shedding and swallowing (from licking and grooming) and returning to haunt a dog at the other end... is also a potential scooting problem.

The vet was the one that said it was a pollen allergy?
No worms, she was just done a couple of weeks ago.
I would do it while she's a asleep but she is very furry, you should see the tail, by the time I would move her tail etc out of the way she would know what is up lol!!
Thanks for the raw carrot tip :-)
ANyway it wasn't so much a question about anal glands (I have done tons of research into that ) more about getting the cream on her bum and not on the fur surrounding her bum :-)
    Thanks again!!!

You might want to crutch around her bum so that there is less fur there for poop to stick to and easier access for the cream.

And then you want to train her to be cool about you poking around there. My dog just loves rubs where her back meets the base of her tail and down the sides of the backs of her legs - so it's not much of a stretch to go from that (as a reward) for letting me play with her tail and massage that a bit and then maybe clip it near the base so the anus is easier to get at.

Ie you try a little bit of movement in the direction you want to go and reward her being calm and compliant with butt rubs or treats. Make sure if you use treats (little bits of carrot if she likes that or some of her dinner) that she doesn't have to move out of the position you want her in to get them, and if she does move - she doesn't get a treat. Start with working on holding position first. Then allowing you to get at her itchy bits. Break it down into tiny steps with lots of treats.

Maybe take her to a professional groomer to clip the area around her anus. Just a thought!
