Default worm, flea & tick treatments

    Hi

I am preparing for the arrival of my new dog.
I want to make sure I am covering all bases with the treatment of worms, fleas & ticks.
My plan was to use valuheart for heart worm treatment. Drontal allwormer and advantix.
Does this seem alright? Please let me know if I'm forgetting anything, or if you have better
ideas, feel free to tell me about them.

This is a good discussion for your vet.

I am in South Australia - ticks are not a major problem here.

So I use revolution for fleas and heartworm and a bunch of other stuff, and canex pink tablets that come with the revolution for worms including tape worm aka hydatids.

advantix or a tick collar - does not replace the need to do a thorough tick search daily if you are in a tick area.

I used something called pro-ban tablets when I took Frosty to a tick area. And glad I did. Some of the other dogs there did get paralysis ticks. I'm not sure if those tablets are still available. And some tick collars carry warnings in the USA - because some of the product can cause cancer in humans ie if you're in contact with a dog wearing one, you can increase your risk. I don't know if those collars are sold in Australia or not, or which active ingredient causes the problem.

Yeah I agree, I would just double check with your vet to make sure you have the best products for your area...........also with tick treatments, I had both my border collies on tablets and a tick collar and this did not stop either of them getting ticks so if you live in a tick-prone area like me be sure to check your dog daily just in case, especially after walkies.

For heartworm, intestinal worms and fleas I use Paranormis, it's just a monthly chewable tablet and works out a lot cheaper than buying everything seperately. It doesn't do ticks though. It's only a new thing on the market so a lot of places don't stock it yet (a few vets do) but it works out much much much cheaper if you buy it from obay (if you enter the code 'shopobay' at the top right it gives you a bigger discount)

I thought Comfortis was only for fleas OM ? we use it too and have no fleas left here, ticks have not been a problem for a long time, I wonder if it has been keeping them away too? we found all other products we used on fleas had only limited success and and for long.
Drontal is a good wormer because it also kills guardia which is far more common than is generally known, you do need to give it for three days in a row to kill guardia though

I wont ever use sentinal again with a dog, very bad experience, i just give an exelpet wormer every 4 or so months, and a spray of fidos pre itch, which kills all fleas, ticks, inc paralysis and is good use in dog beds and kennels etc. and also prevents them on the dog.

I used to use plain old permoxin but switched.

For wormers I use interceptor - heart worm and intestinal. Fleas I used comfortis and ticks I get a tick collar which lasts around 2 months. We haven't had a tick yet and the comfortis killed all the fleas quickly...although we only had one or two of those.

There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.

Paranormis is from the same company that does comfortis. So it's that plus the wormers for only a bit more money
