Looks a bit like mange to me but could also be a really bad flea allergy (flea allergies can be caused by just one flea bite).

Dog needs to go to the vet and get checked asap as it is probably in a lot of pain and very uncomfortable. Needs antibiotics and if they think it is a case of mange (mites) they will need to do skin scrapings to confirm.

Is the hair loss anywhere else?

There are two types of mange and both will affect different areas of the body. Demodectic mange typically starts around the eyes and muzzle. Sarcoptic mange (which is highly contagious to other dogs) starts on the legs and body.

The above *could* be flea bite dermatitis, but it doesn't look like it to me from the pics. Flea bite derm typically starts on the back, just above the base of the tail.

Is the dog itching at all?

To me it lokos environmental. Soemthing the dog is laying on or coming into contatc with. Does it sleep outside normally?

The only way of getting a diagnoses is to take the dog to the Vet.

A realist just finishes the damn thing and refills it.

Keira had demodetic mange when she was 4 months old and it started on the top part of her front legs and never went near her eyes or muzzle so doesn't necessarily always conform to the norm.

Could be as Anne said environmental, maybe the dog is allergic to something it is sitting on.

In the end unless the people are willing to take the dog to the vet it will be hard to clear it up. Poor baby.

As said before many reasons, one could also be stress and diet. I have had a few rescues that have looked terrible. As soon as their lifestyle changed their coats came back.

Is this dog very lean/thin. Hard to tell form the picture. Maybe the RSPCA should be involved, if the owners are unwilling to get it seen to. It is just sad, poor dog

She looks like she has little patches coming up on her back.. Its weird, I seen her one day and about three days later it was like this! I have told the owner that she needs to go to the vet, until then I have bathed her and given her a flea treatment. I am going to bomb underneath his house over the weekend because i know she has fleas, I just never seen anything like this before!

I would be very careful it is sarcoptic mange. Check Ruby for patches regularly because if she is coming into contact with this dog and is sarcoptic, then she too will suffer the same.
