I heard that some breeds such as border collies can have a bad reaction to ivermectin.

I travel to a vet at the base of the blue mountains, she breeds and shows GSD and French Bulldogs and is also a dog judge.

She makes the mixture up for me for each dog according to weight.

We also apply it behind the ear of the pet rat for external parasites etc.

I would recommend you check with a vet before using ivermectin on your breed.

My preferred flea and worming treatment is Sentinal. I don't like the yearly heartworm injection (heard of too many dogs dying from it) and the Sentinal is the only product I've found that doesn't seem to lose it's effectiveness. I've found Frontline and Advantage etc to lose their effectiveness quite severely depending on how long you use them.

As far as ticks go, nothing beats a THOROUGH daily check IMO. I have a tool for removing and killing ticks which was the best $8 that I ever spent!

when farmers accidentally kill their dogs, they don't like to talk about it much.

Peta23 - are there many BCs up your way?

I have cousins who are farmers - I will have to ask them what they use to keep their dogs free of parasites but I don't think they just dab a bit of the ivermectin behind the dogs' ears as they do the sheep. The bugs are different and probably have different effective chemicals.

We are farmers and our dogs are not drenched. They get frontlined and have all had the yearly heartworm injection since it became available with no ill effects. Jodi and Jessie will have the same when vet ok's it. Shadow was on monthly chew tabs till we switched him to injection. The risk of heartworm here is very high with mozzies and irrigation. I feel the risks of injection are low.
