Thread: Paw Nail Trimming

    Default Paw Nail Trimming

I have been meaning to trim Paw-Sha's nails for some time now, but I have been hesitant to do so. I thought about getting a dog groomer in to cut them or even going to the vet.
I own a pair of large doggy nail clippers, and this morning I dicided to trim her nail myself, after all how hard can it be right??.....now I wish I had left the job for someone else. I accidently cut one of her nail to close to the quick and although she didn't yelp at all, I know she is now in discomfort....I feel awful.

Perhaps someone can tell me if there is a better, easier way, and also let me know how often I should be trimming them?
I feel like I am the only owner who does not feel comfortable in cutting bloomin dog nails! LOL..... Please help me!

Paw-Sha, you live so close to me if you're in Essendon. Why don't you pop over to my house & I'll show you how to do it on my lot. Otherwise, I'm happy to do it for you on a regular basis until you get the hang of it. It will only take 5 minutes. I take my girls for a massage once a week & take my clippers with me to do all the dogs while they're on the table for the time I'm there.

I used to hate clipping Jess's nails as hers were black!
I taught her to lie on her back with her paws up...this way I could see the quick.
Candy and Falcon both have white nails and they are soo much easeir to trim..but I still have them lie on their back for me..lol

Black nails are such a pain & my Mish is a bloody wriggler, so the odd bleed happens now & then. Have you tried positioning the leg as you would if you were shoeing a horse ?? That way the dog is still standing, you've got the paw positioned with the pads facing you and you can see very clearly how much tip you've got to work with. Does this make sense ??

Is it that hand held thing that you see ads for on the TV ?? Looks a bit gimicky to me & I wondered if the noise would put the dogs off. I'm interested to see if it works though, so give it a go & let me know please.

    Hi Paw-Sha

Dont feel bad for clipping Paw-Sha's nail to short, i'm sure they will grow back in no time... it obviously didn't cause her to much discomfort as she didn't yelp in pain, so pls don't be so hard on yourself or feel guilty.

Sorry i cant offer you any advice in regards to dog nail clipping as i'm not even game to try cutting Floyd's nails, i get he's vet to do it whenever we visit the vets...

i am a groomer and it took me ages to feel comfortable with trimming nails, you will get the hang of it, if you do cut the quick you can put the nail in corn flour as this stops the bleeding also you can buy some stuff called styptic powder from pet stores, works better than corn flour

OO, thanks for that Miss J. I'll take a little container of corn flour with me on massage day when I cut all the dog's nails while they're on the table. I do blood the odd one from time to time, so this is a great help.
