Thread: Expired dry food?

  1. #1

    Default Expired dry food?

We mostly feed BARF, however I have a bag of holistic select dry food ( anchovy and fish one) that I use to top up, when supplied are low etc.

I just realised that the bag I am using expired in January. Its a 14kg bag, and its still 3/4s full. I bought it just after Christmas- so big big lesson is to check the expiry before buying, it must have been really close to expiry when purchased.
Question is: would you continue to use it? I feel like increasing his dry food for the next 2 mths to get rid of it (otherwise it will last until next Christmas...). Will dry food 6 mths past expiry be bad for the dog??

I used up a bag a couple of months after the expiry date.

I admit that Nutro - being expensive can be a slow seller. Is why I like Black Hawk - it's straight out of the factory so has a good long use by.

If you're worried you could phone up your favourite shelter and ask for an opinion or if they'd like a donation.

    Sure.

They feed supercoat at RSPCA and I wouldn't feed that to my dog if I didn't have to.

I meant in this context..opened expired dry food that you usually feed your dog but don't want to if it is not good for it, as the OP is asking.

To my mind opened food bags are too dangerous as people could tamper with it. When I rehomed River the rescue would take my unopened tin of puppy formula but not the one that was opened.

Fair enough. The rescues would have an idea of how long after the expiry date it would be ok to feed the dog the food. Ie some would probably get the about to expire stuff donated a fair bit. And there's some leeway - my dog was ok on stuff that was expired by about a month. Not sure about 6 months though.

puppy formula - is that like dried milk? I can imagine nobody would want an opened tin of PAL - except maybe the wasp baiting people.

Sweetboy, see if your dog still likes it. So many people worldwide survived when there was no use by or best before dates on packaging.
A blown can of something is another story.
A week ago I found a packet of milk arrowroot biscuits at the back of my cupboard that were 2 years out of date. Had one bite..very stale so they went in the bin. A lot of times dates are just a suggested time frame. I recon they would be stale because of the time they were opened rather than the date it says on the packaging.

Yes, my dog will happilky eat it. He is a beagle and will also eat rat bait, lego, plastic lunchboxes (tupperware) and through a wooden door, so I dont really trust his taste buds to tell me if its good or bad.

It still smells ok- I am going to take him off barf for a month and use it up I think.

Local pet shop here sells out of date ( or very near to it) dry foods really cheap. I feed if they are over... The key words are "best before" and not "use by".
