Thread: Raw Chicken???

  1. #1

    Default Raw Chicken???

Since I read that dry food and raw food is digested differently I have been feeding Poppy dry for breakfast and raw for dinner.

We are just about at the end of the minced chicken carcas portions that I put in the freezer about 2 months ago! There was SO much of it!

Miss Poppy is a guts! She eats REALLY fast and when she was sick the vet seemed to think that may be effecting her tummy.

She literally hoovers down the raw mince.

For this reason and to hopefully buy it in smaller portions I'm wondering if I could feed her 1 or 2 chicken wings each night INSTEAD of the mince? I'm guessing this would make her chew more (as she would HAVE to) and I wouldn't end up with a freezer full of 10 thousand glad bags!

    Thanks!

Raw wings and necks is the only part of the chook we feed our dogs.. Rest of the chook bones are thrown out..

Never had any problems re digestion from any of our dogs, past and present..

Thanks Mitte! Would 1 or 2 wings be suitable for a 5 month old Cav X

I'm leaning towards 2 based on the amount of mince we feed her.

To try her out on them just go into Coles or Woolies & get a couple from the deli section for her.
Watch her when she eats them as some dogs still try to hoover them down, same goes with necks.
I had one baby Stafford nearly choke on one trying to swallow it whole, but she was a piggy eater.
Funny watching a 7 week old pup chew up a 1/2 frame but teaches them to eat slower. Now mine only get 1/2 frames, even the Westies, and they have to chew them. JMHO

Amy, be careful with chicken wings, I stopped feeding them to the gang about 6 years ago after some close calls with dogs choking on them. Got fed up with having to upend dogs or stick my fingers down their throats - and this was when I supervised!

So now I only give chicken necks or chicken frames, not had a problem with those.

Also with chicken wings I found the dogs packed on the weight from all the skin and fat on them.

Just my experience, everyone will differ on the whole wings/necks debate.

Thanks everyone! She is a guts and sucks her food down so I don't want her to choke on them. Cav's are also susceptable to being chubbas so I don't want her packing on the weight!

Maybe chicked necks are the way to go instead???

I've heard people serve them frozen to slow their dogs down.

I don't feed any of that to my dog cos it all just comes back to haunt us. I don't like cleaning up the mess either.

My dogs have never been the "gulp it down quickly" type.. They always take their time chewing through .. I only ever give them 1 wing or neck which will last about 10 minutes.
I guess if they were the "gulping down ASAP" kind of dog, then certainly, I would worry about choking... Kosmo was prone to Choking on some 'items', but luckily we were there each time to rescue the silly boofhead !!

I have only ever fed my three chicken necks and they only get 2 a day for lunch, the smaller ones (Pipi and Teddy) only have 1, Max has 2..
