    Default How Do You Feed?

We've talked a lot about what to feed but I have been wondering about the hows and whens and wheres of feeding.

    The hows:
Do you follow the instructions on the bag of dry food to the letter? If it says two cups do you carefully measure out two cups or do you simply judge by eye? Do you alter the recommended amounts based on the weight and activity level of your dog?

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?
Do you feed at a regular time?
Do you fast your dog regularly?

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?

I'm not expecting people to answer all the questions. This is not a poll or a survey. The questions are simply there as a guideline.

I'm just interested to know how other people feed and what works best for them and their dogs.

I'm hoping to steal a few ideas to try for myself.

We have a 6 month old cattle dog cross. We feed her twice a day, morning and night, at regular times. We don't measure the 'exact' right amount, but very close to. She gets that dog sausage thing. She usually has a few dog bikkies in her bowl as well, but she doesn't get a lot of them. She also gets 2-3 bones/chicken necks/ turkey necks a week. She usually gets fed outside, although sometimes we feed her in the bathroom. We don't fast her.

Sorry i cant answer questions in regards to dry, tinned or commercial dog foods as i've never fed type of food to any of my dogs, nor do i intend to in the future.

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

I make up home made raw meals in bulk & freeze, I measure ingredients by eye & bag in 250-300grm lots, based on Floyd's weight & size that myself & he's vet think is a very suitable amount for Floyd.

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?
    Floyd get's 2 meals a day.

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?
Feed main in morning, night meals are usually light, canned sardines or small tub of plain or mango yogurt or 3 chicken necks.

Do you feed at a regular time?
Yes feed at regular time around 7.30-8am & 4-4.30pm

Do you fast your dog regularly
    ?
NO BLOODY WAY, unless i was advised to by Floyd's vet for medical reasons only.

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?

In he's bowl on kitchen floor.

Raw food diet in this house as well, so we don't stock kibble

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?
Servings are done by "eye measurement" & knowing how much each dog needs.

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?
No. Bowls are removed once the meal time is over. They are constantly at me all day while I work on treats though.

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?
2 with a frozen chicken carcass in the middle of the day for teeth cleaning

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?
50% in the morning, 50% at night
Do you feed at a regular time?
Yes. Routine is good for my dogs I find
Do you fast your dog regularly?
Mish has a fast day on a Monday. Grains & cereals for both meals to clean out any toxins she may have picked up during the week. I'm yet to introduce fast day to the 2 young 'uns.

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?
Mish outside because she's a resource guarder. Spirit & Tara inside. Tara's bowl in a stand. I have to get a stand for Spirit.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

Interesting to see it's the raw feeders replying so far.

I came up with this topic because I was thinking about Cavaliers. I remembered visiting a breeder aquaintance around feeding time and offered to lend a hand as she had about 12 adults and a litter of pups. Every bowl was labled with the dog's name and each dog was fed something slightly different. Every morsel of meat, vegetable and kibble was carefully weighed. Then it was a pinch of this, a few drops of that, 1/4 teaspoon of something else. Yogurt for one, grated cheese for another and so on. It took over an hour to feed everyone.

At the other extreme you have those who simply open a can or a bag of kibble, tip it in a bowl (some don't even use bowls; I've seen folk who just tip it on the concrete) and that's it, feeding done.

I'm a middle-of-the-roader. During the dry season I feed bones about 7.30 am, usually chicken wings and/or brisket bones. Main meal about 8.30 pm after the kids are in bed as Kenna and Strada are easily distracted at mealtimes. I reverse this during the wet season. Main meal am, so they can sleep in off inside with the air con on. Bones late evening when sometimes it's a bit cooler outside.

    I'm another raw feeder.

God No! I go by my dogs weight and exercise. If they get too thin, feed more and vice versa

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

When I did feed raw I started measuring everything carefully and ended up just putting stuff together by sight. Always go by how the dog looks and feels

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?

    No - Billie would explode

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

    Generally twice

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?

    Equal

Do you feed at a regular time?

Ish - Billie lets me know if I am late

Do you fast your dog regularly?

Nah - they tend to do it themselves and I ocassionally miss a meal as I am away or out or whatever

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?

Kitchen, bowls - Flash eats lying down on his bed - bones are fed outside - something Rufus is yet to learn

just roughly. For example, if dogs don't do a lot due to bad weather or something, they get less, if it's just a usual day, they get normal amount (I never measure, just roughly scoop), and if I work with them and they spend a lot outdoors excercising, running etc, then I give them a bit more.

Do you alter the recommended amounts based on the weight and activity level of your dog?
    Yup!

I cook from time to time and occasionally buy ready made BARF, I never measure, just judge by eye. BARF is however packed in ready made portions so I give them by weight (250 g/per 10 kg of dog)

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?
    No way.

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?
Twice. I'd even do it three times (a daily amound split in three meals) if I could, but I'm at work most of the day so it's not really possible.

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?
i split daily amount in two - breakfast and dinner. they get nibbles in between.

Do you feed at a regular time?
yes, roughly. during the week it's 6 am and 6.30 pm, on weekends we all sleep in and no one complains

Do you fast your dog regularly?
no, if they don't want to eat, that's fine.

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?
laundry they have their dining space set up. It's not raised.

As dog nutrition and feeding is one of my major interests I've studied a lot and actually it's better to feed several small portions during the day then just one or two. It's the same as with people, regulates blood sugar and it's easier on the stomach. Also, this could be one of preventions for stomach torsion.

    >My dogs are fed dry kibble twice a day and for Candy...yes I follow the directions for her size and weight.
    >No precise time..just in the morning between 7-8am then at night..about 5-6pm.
    >They are fed out on the back porch.
    >I don't need to fast them...Candy does it herself and so does Falcon. If they don't eat their brekky...then I don't feed them that night because they still have food in their dish. (Falcon doesn't have his own dish..he eats what Candy leaves for him..if I give him his own dish...he doesn't eat it ).

    >They regularly get denta bones, marrow bones, chicken necks and whatever raw offcuts of meat I have when cooking for the family. If I have a heap of raw offcut fat from diced steak or lamb..I will throw it all over the backyard for the dogs to find....keeps them busy for a while!

Nope, I don't know what it says on my dry food bags apart from the brand and ingredients!

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

Based on experience, ie which dog is what size and age. Amount and additives can vary if someone starts to get a bit porky or ribby.

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?

For the Borzoi - no. The girls would gorge themsleves, and Boris would leave it to the magpies! The Salukis? Yes. The more food I get into them the better - damn supermodel dogs!

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

One. Sonya gets fat on two and Boris leaves one anyway and only likes to eat in the evening. The Salukis are topped up between meals if they empty their bowls.

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?

    Usually evening, see below.

Do you feed at a regular time?

Not usually. I don't like them to expecct it at a given time, as if I'm late home etc they can get upset. I'd rather them more relaxed about it, and I hate whinging at the door....

Do you fast your dog regularly?

Usually once a week, the Salukis once every two weeks. I'll then feed in the morning after a fast day. If I don't fast, they''ll do it themselves after a little while and waste meals. And it stops Sonya from getting fat - which she is a little prone to!

    The Wheres:
Outside. Puppy inside, but she'll be out with the others when she's bigger too. On the rare occasions we have an injury etc they are usually confined indoors and then eat in as well.

I go roughly by what the bag says (I think it has it in grams not cups so I find that hard to figure out!) But she gets 2 cups a day.

Most of the time I get chicken mince and veggies, mix it up and make small portions by eye. I give her this with her night time biscuits. I will adjust her meal according to any treats she's had and how much exercise she has done that day. She also gets sardines, chicken frames, egg, any left over meat during the week.

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

    2 meals

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?

50% in the morning, 50% at night - this meal is slightly larger (has the 'extras')

Do you feed at a regular time?

The morning - about 7am (we always have to make her wait! Little gutz)
    At night - around 6pm.

Do you fast your dog regularly?

    Never

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?

Metal bowl out the back, but sometimes in the laundry.
