    Default Frosty meals

Do you follow the instructions on the bag of dry food to the letter?
I use that as a starting point, I weigh my dog and figure out how much the people who want to sell more dog food (quoting my vet) recommend, then I reduce that by 1/3, then divide it by half for morning and night serves. And I often mix the kibble with plain yogurt for extra calcium and cos she likes the taste better.

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?
I measure most of the ingredients for chicken casserole but the veg tends to go by eye - between 1/2 kg or 1kg. 1kg meat, 1 kettle water (1.8 litres approx), and bran and rice and oats - gets measured. Then I take the cauldron of dog food and spoon that into 300ml or 600ml plastic storage boxes (like you get from chinese takeaway) - 1 serve is 300ml. And freeze.

Of interest the kibble packet recommended amount does not take into account exercise quantity, treats fed during training, marrow bone calories, or the casserole I feed as well as the kibble. So theoretically I feed her too much but given how much time we spend exercising - she's athletic not skinny at the moment. If she starts to pork up (muscle definition and waist start to disappear) I will cut back the food.

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?
    No

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?

Puppy dog is 12 months old - and I feed morning and night - 1/2 the daily amount each time.

    The whens:
Do you feed at a regular time?
Do you fast your dog regularly?

Time is not very regular - more when convenient - mostly I feed her after our walks and before I feed me. I make her fast 12 to 24 hours if she gets the runs persistantly, and then she goes onto small serves of boiled rice and chicken.

    The Wheres:
Kitchen floor for meals, outside for bones, sticks etc and she eats her bed in the office. Sigh.

Do you follow the instructions on the bag of dry food to the letter? If it says two cups do you carefully measure out two cups or do you simply judge by eye? Do you alter the recommended amounts based on the weight and activity level of your do
I alter mine based on the weight and activity of the dog.I also add sardines, raw eggs, yoghurt to their kibble on other days.

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?
I feed raw with veg twice a week and I judge by eye.

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?
Definitely not..the diabetic silky would gobble the lot.

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?
    Twice a day.

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning? morning.
Do you feed at a regular time?Yes. The diabetic has strict times so the rest are fed at the same times.
Do you fast your dog regularly? No.

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?
Having 9 dogs, they all have different spots...kitchen, patio, bathroom.
The more people I meet, the more I like my dogs.

No, in fact I couldn't even tell you what the bag recommendations are! I just throw a handful of dry food in with her other food, just to balance up the diet.

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

A little of both I guess I measure the grains, but i just through in the veggies and the meat.
If I notice that Paw-Sha is putting on a bit more weight, I will cut the food down, if I know she has been running a lot in a week I give her a bit more.
I am lucky enough to have the vet just around the corner, so Paw-Sha and I often take a walk there and have her weighed. at the moment she is 30.6kg. Perfect for an adult Lab, so whatever I am doing at the moment....it seems to be working just fine.

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

    2 meals per day.

I have been very lucky with Paw-Sha.
As soon as she arrived, (eight weeks old). We started giving a command for her to eat.
We use a word NOT associated with food or eating at all.....we say for example ...."Power" as the command.
My OH said he knew a friend who's dogs were baited and died. So we use that command so she only eats when we tell her too.
She will just sit there and wait for the command now....this took about three-five weeks to train into her. Now it is super easy.....
If we forget to say "the word" she will still be sitting there staring at the food drooling, 10 minutes later. (This only happend the once!) LOL

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?

Both morning and night are the same, so 50% morning and 50% at night

Do you feed at a regular time?

    yes.....6am and 6pm every day....including Weekends.
If I am not up at 6am on the dot Paw-Sha will tell me what time it is! LOL,
She is a great reliable alarm clock.
Luckly, I am usually awake before she starts nudging me, to get up.

Do you fast your dog regularly?

Never.....well not yet anyway....I will have to fast her before she goes under general anesthetic on the 29th October.
    Under Vets instructions ONLY!
I would NEVER fast a dog for any other reason.

    The Wheres:

Outside, under the carport she has her food bowl and a water bowl there.
She also has a water bowl inside, which she drinks out of the most....I change the water every day and wash her food bowl every second day.
It is a rule in my house that dogs do not eat inside.....by doing this she does not beg for food at the table, or drool, when we are eating.....she knows she is not getting any, so she just lays there and falls asleep usually.

Omg Dogsrule - I didn't know you have 9 dogs!!

Paw-Sha - Taya is the same in that she will wait for her command to eat ('ok'). A couple of times Mum and I have forgotten to say it and gone away, only to come back and see the poor thing sitting there drooling haha

Do you follow the instructions on the bag of dry food to the letter? If it says two cups do you carefully measure out two cups or do you simply judge by eye? Do you alter the recommended amounts based on the weight and activity level of your dog?

I use it as a guide line, but it does vary with how my dogs are looking

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

Doesn't apply, I dont feed raw

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?

No, Madeline would scoff the lot and make herself sick

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

One. I started out with two but Griffen never ate his in the morning.

    The whens:
Do you feed your dog his main meal night or morning?

Night, for some reason Griffen wont eat before 5pm

Do you feed at a regular time?

Usually around 6.30 after we've eaten

Do you fast your dog regularly?

I dont but Griffen fasts himself. It's not unusual for him to skip 2 or 3 meals a week, it makes it very hard to keep weight on him

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?

Griffen in the bathroom (usually while I'm taking a bath) in raised bowls so he doesn't lie down while eating.

Madelines food is scattered outside to slow her down

I do not measure as none of my dogs have been ones who scoff the lot whenever they can.

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

I feed raw a few times a week. Judge by eye and by observing how much they eat or do not eat in a sitting.

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?

    Yes

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

    2

    The whens:

The dry is there for the mornings if wanted
    Main meal evening.

Do you feed at a regular time?
    Reaonably regular, 5 or 6pm.

Do you fast your dog regularly?
No, unless under medical advice. I find they self regulate.

    The Wheres:
    Kitchen? Outside? Raised surface?

Usually inside, there is dry inside and out. Raw bones outside.

I'm not expecting people to answer all the questions. This is not a poll or a survey. The questions are simply there as a guideline.

I'm just interested to know how other people feed and what works best for them and their dogs.

I'm hoping to steal a few ideas to try for myself.

No, I feed by weight conditions. If my dogs are too fat i cut it down, if too skinney i up the amount

If you feed raw and/or your own home made food do you carefully weigh and measure all ingredients or does it vary from meal to meal? Do you base amounts on your dog's weight or simply judge by eye?

I dont really feed raw apart from meaty bones or excess mince meat and its usualy given instead of kibble.

Do you leave a constant supply of dry food for your dog to nibble at during the day?

No, i did try it once and my dogs looked like tellytubbies after so wont do that again.

How many meals a day do you feed your adult dog?

One meal that I try and split in two, morning and night, but more often than not it's just the evening.

Do you feed at a regular time?

    usually 7am and 5/5:30 pm

Do you fast your dog regularly?

    No

    The Wheres:
Outside on the varanda or on the ground, it depends on weather conditions.
