Thread: Raw feeding, meat question

    Default Raw feeding, meat question

    Hi all.
I am finally switching my sammy pup who is now 6 mths onto raw.
We are keeping holistic select for brekkie, just for convinience and ease for when we take him camping or go away ( wont be very often but just incase)

He will be fed raw the other two meals.
He has always been fed raw meat, he has it added to his lunch and dinner kibble meals every day, so is well used to raw.
I do currently feed him mainly organic or good quality meat, but this will NOT be possible switching to mainly raw feeding as tha mount of meat needed is much larger.
He is having vets all natural and I have bought chicken frame mince with liver added from the butchers (human quality) which is cheap and will get the cheaper supermarket beef mince from shops.

I have found these pet suppliers, which are preservative free, anyone use them?

    Canine country

they seem to supply all the produce places with raw pet quality meat and I have rang them, they seem pretty ethical, their supply is originally from human grade, but used as pet due to quality and control, over production, bruising, being too near other meats so 'contaminated' for export etc... They assure me its good quality meat and checked, no parasites etc.. they also answered all my questions

I have used the chicken mince yesterday and he had a tiny bit loose stool last night and today but it could be the increase in the vets all natural stuff and him getting used too it?
I was going to try Leanards chicken butchers for their plain chicken frame pet mince too...

    SO
what meats do you use? where do you get them from? thanks

I put my Kelpie pup on Raw at 6 months old.
Like your pup, I gave her kibble in the morning and then Raw at night.

The chicken I currently have is from a local Premium Pet Mince service called Demz Dinnerz, sadly they're only small and only offer their services around my area. They get the Chicken from a restaurant, it's kinda just like butchers mince only with a bit more meat in it.
I get it in bulk which costs $25 for 20kg.

A butchers then opened up around the corner from me so I asked how much he charges, he said he charges $10 for 20kg so I asked what's in the mince - he said only bone & skin/fat. THAT is a HORRIBLE pet mince that could cause problems for your dog in the future, make sure you buy pet mince that does not have a lot of fat and has SOME meat in it(a little organ is fine too).

I then started getting her beef mince from the supermarket(which is $4-5 for 1kg) but she HATED it. Dogs LOVE the taste of blood and this mince is so dry it has no liquid in it at all so it barely has any flavor for the dogs.
I now get my beef(Premium quality, not quite human standard but close to it) from a proper dog food place. They charge me $60 for 10kg which is sort of expensive but my dog LOVES it and it's really healthy for them.

I always get it in bulk so I can mix my own veggies in it.
I put carrot, peas & green beans in it.
The reason I put my own in is because the places I get the meat from put veggies in such as corn & potato which dogs can't even digest.

I highly recommend not getting supermarket human quality beef(especially the dry bloodless minced one) and mix your own veggies into it so you know exactly what your dog is eating.

Oh also, kangaroo is very healthy for dogs(it's like feeding both chicken and beef at the same time) but I am an Australian who is against eating our own animals so I refuse to feed it to my dog.
Never EVER feed anything other than Beef, Chicken & Roo.
Raw Lamb & Pork is full of worms and stuff that is harmfull to your dog.

Thanks. Sadly I cannot afford the supermarket premium at $11.99 a kg, he has had the cheaper supermarket one before and ate it just fine.
The butcher chicken frame is very popular, he said its the chicken remenants and bone left with liver thrown in, I know the chicken place leanards (sp?) sell similar which I know a lot of raw feeders buy too, so pretty sure its ok
They do stock beef mince pet quality from the same supplier of pet food, but its more expensive than the supermaket per kg, so I thought the supermarket one would be better?
I was going to buy roo from Coles occasionally too

There's nothing really wrong with feeding the dry supermarket human mince meat, dogs just don't like the taste as much.
I know someone who thinks she's the best owner in the world because she only feeds her dog human quality foods.. lol I bet it doesn't have much flavor added to it.

If you want to feed human quality, I say go ahead I just think you should mix gravy into it for flavor (make sure the gravy has no onion or garlic as they're poisonous to dogs). I don't mix gravy into my dogs food because the blood has enough flavor.

I have never heard a single bad review about BARF so if you want to feed that it'll be a good option too

Raw eggs are kinda high on the list of bad foods but a lot of people feed them because it makes the coat shiny
