Default Victorian Rangers... how one thinks the law works

This was just posted up on BSL Australia, comments from a council ranger from Victoria.

So lets get this straight...say, an owner of a AMstaff gets the dog registered in Victoria, it unfortunately passes away....so the owner gets a new dog, say a chihuahua or a lab, but doesnt register this new dog. Will the new dog get seized because the paperwork says it is a pit bull type, does it get euthanised? I am so glad I don't live in Victoria anymore!!

Technically what the "ranger" wrote is true. According to the new legislation in Vic, a dog that fits the restricted breed criteria can be classed a restricted breed and euth'd. It matters not what the dog is, has been or was registered as. If it fits the descriptors it's restricted.

It has yet to be tested in a legal sense on ANKC papers for an Amstaff... But the Supreme Court case law from Qld on that may help keep registered Amstaffs safe. Amstaffs will otherwise fit the descriptors.

Dangerous laws yes. But the comments aren't wrong. This is the sort of tripe that gets rushed through into law when based on media driven hysterics.

Call me thick (well you don't have to actually) but, I don't quite understand the whole BSL.

I'm in Queensland, and was oblivious to it until I joined this forum, to be honest.
