Thread: Ohio's Pitbulls are FREE!!!!

    Default Ohio's Pitbulls are FREE!!!!

The Ohio Governor signed HB-14 today, a bill that repeals BSL in the State of Ohio, BSL that has been around for 25 YEARS! This means all the PB's and their owners are free from this terrible law, free to be normal dogs and dog owners again and free to openly show themselves and to be ambassadors for the breed.

It is only a small thing in the grand scale that is BSL but it is a WIN, and every win is a step closer.

It actually made me a bit emotional this morning. I can only hope that one day this is something we are celebrating here in Australia.

ETA - Ohio was the only State in the US that had BSL that automatically declared a dog dangerous based on how it looked, sound familiar?
It costs taxpayers in Ohio 17 million dollars a year! What a waste.
The new bill also includes new laws on the control of real dangerous dogs, the ones who are actually attacking and biting people and their idiot owners.

I seen that this morning! Great news for Ohio!

Here is what is going on with in Miami with the laws Ask voters if they want to repeal county pit-bull ban, Miami-Dade committee says - Miami-Dade - MiamiHerald.com

And I think in Ottawa the motion to remove BSL is being tabled on the 23 Feb!

Miami-Dade is in a little bit of trouble as the Commisioners are trying to get it put to a Public vote during this years election. It is likely if ut to a public vote it won't pass. Fingers crossed the supporting Rep does not agree to that.

I think you mean Ontario? (Or Onscario as residents call it)

I believe Ontario is having another hearing for this bill tomorrow but it is still in its early stages. Although I do believe it has come to light how ineffective and expensive BSL in Ontario is and this will help to get the bill moved through.

This is definitely a good sign.....but what are the federal laws over there? Because that overrides any state laws at the end of the day...or is there nothing federal (be great if there wasnt)?

I am only thinking of this coz I watched a marijuana documentary the other day and lots of states in the US allow medicinal use, but the federal law still has it as illegal fullstop and that overrides each states medicinal use

No federal BsL laws in the Unitrd States thats why some States they are fine and others they are not. Although most of the actually States dont have overseeing laws either usually it comes down to County/Council laws over there. Pretty sure Ohio was the only State that had Statewide laws against them all other laws are on a local government level such as Miami-Dade County in Florida.

I feel sorry for any dog owner that lost their beloved family pitbull because of the law in Ohio, before they repealed it.

I wonder which breed will be their next target??

Wow this is great news! It's shocking that it has taken 25 years but let's hope that this serves as an example to everyone else. And 17 million dollars a year?? Someone should make an ad - the real costs of BSL Mastercard style. Enforcing the policy - 17 million/year, families losing their dog - priceless.
