My understanding is that these owners tried to do the right thing and were repeatedly given the run-around by the council.

Meanwhile - I read that a locally well known homeless man in Melbourne has had his GSD seized by Melbourne council. He would sit in the park with it muzzled and on lead so it couldn't cause any problems and they still took it. I think he should take his case to the news media.

If thats true then they shouldnt have a problem at VCAT, personally if i were in that situation i would have gone to the council offices and not left until it was sorted. I guess regardless of the council running you around its how much effort you put in yourself.

I don't think they did leave it to the last minute. I suspect the council refused to register the dog when they first applied - in loads of time. And then the council used the info on the application they refused to seize the dog. So much for "amnesty".

And apparently any Victorian council can just refuse to register any dog they like for any reason they like - and then it can be seized for being unregistered.

VCAT is all very well - but it takes years for them to get a case processed. That's years of a dog sitting in dog jail not being properly exercised or socialised and in some cases - teased and provoked by staff who should know better.

Victorian dog law is guilty until proved innocent - and by then the dog may well be aggressive from being housed in inappropriate conditions away from its family for way too long. There's no bail, no accountability and this affects a lot of people who cannot afford lengthy court battles - which can exceed the life time of the average dog.

PS note for anyone wanting to make a long and detailed response - try typing it up in a text editor like notepad or word or notepad++ (my fav) and then cut and paste it in.

They may have gone into the council direct as well as a phone call, a report refers that they did do that and an aco said that is what has happened,
Mr Schinck said the owners had not completed the registration application once told of the additional fee for registering a restricted breed dog
,my thoughts are a communication breakdown occured between the bench attendant and the Thurstons over monies and time restraints come to fruition, after all the dog was seized the day amnesty ran out.

I wish them the best of luck.

Sounds to me like some tight asses who didnt want to spend the coin so they took a huge risk with thier poor dog who is now the one who will suffer.
