Default BSL Counter Argument - Why It Doesn't Work

This article is a blog with links to news articles describing the death of a toddler left alone in a house with three "pitbulls" - ie breed unconfirmed, in the UK.

The article explains why the breed is irrelevant and the fact that the toddler was left alone in a 3rd story attic apartment - was more relevant.

The article also argues that banning a particular breed of dog will not stop criminals owning guard dogs and training them to attack people.

    And in other news
28 children under 5 have drowned in back yard swimming pools in the last 12 months - that was this morning's australian news.

I thought that pros and cons of BSL have been hammered to death here.

I see no correlation between that and backyard drownings. Ban swimming pools?

I thought the blog argued fairly articulately - unlike some of what we've had in here. I also thought the main point of the BSL was to "save lives". I just think they'd save more lives if they focussed on the major preventable causes of death in small children. Or even big children.

Banning a particular breed of dog - won't help and will make life very inconvenient for loads of responsible owners of well behaved dogs.

You are preaching to the choir though.

Mostly I wanted to stick a link where I and anyone else who wanted the info could find it. Ie ammunition for the choir to do something constructive about getting the problem with BSL sorted.

Im quite interested to see the "for" side of the BSL argument now to be honest.

All the threads here are anti BSL, and pretty much everybody that posts here is anti BSL and the odd time you get a for person, they are kinda hammered.

But I would be interested in seeing some "for" stuff just for interests sake

There were several politicians making speechs along the lines of "one child too many". Ie the for side is an emotional argument in my opinion - hence my referencing other ways for children to die that are not so emotionally charged for the general public.

That's the trouble with it. There's no science to show that it makes any difference and quite a bit that shows it doesn't help or makes things worse. Owners are more likely to avoid registering their dogs and it increases the attraction of the breed to criminals, thugs and bullies if it's perceived as a "killer dog breed".

Bit late for that, thats why the breed is already being targeted

Seemed like. Great arrival to me. Removed the emotion involved and pretty much looks at all the facts and debunked some of the BS included when the media "cover" a story.

Criminals are hardly going to respect the law when it comes to registering dogs, their cars, driving while disqualified etc.

What the BSL has been doing is persecuting the law abiding. And they just made it so much worse in Victoria.
