Liss. You have done everything right regarding the birth of these pups and for the welfare of the mother.

I am wondering though if you would mind this being made into a sticky (if the mods agree) with an added bit on the title that may serve to stop someone breeding when they find out what can go wrong, complications and the cost, of time, 2 hourly feeds and vet expenses etc.

I am probably way out of line here but it was a thought. As I said, you have done everything right in respect of the birth.

Awesome news on the mince. Our local butcher loves knowing he is helping out our dogs and takes pride in selling us mince, good people often jump on board when they know people care about their dogs.

You've worked our butt off so far and are still going strong. Big congrats are in order.

and I know how much work big litters can be...

Di I think making this thread sticky is a great idea!!
For anyone thinking of getting a litter out of their dog like we were I would say this now do u have a spare $4000 in the bank? Cause we certainly were not thinking about that when mated our bitch I wanted her to have a litter cause she's such a great dog and I wanted another like her before we desexed her and that there is the honost truth, and in doing that I almost lost her
Yes like me u might think lots of bitches have litter without any trouble I have seen multiple litters where no problems arise.
But this here is the reality of what can happen, the unexpected and we had no choice but to step up and take that responsibly of the trouble she was in after all we had done this to her so why should she have to suffer?
And even now the pups are ok and so is she this is far from over and they are not all safe yet it will take more time and commitment from us to see it thru
This also happened on a public holiday so it was a emergancy vet ( lots more money) and the lady laughed when we went to pay our bill at the vet last night of $4170 with a combination of 3 credit cards, a bank card and cash but hey these things Have to be done!!
I hope people thinking of breeding read this and think twice about it!!

Good for you for your honesty and the fact that you do care for your dog. I will be thinking of all those puppies and mum and hope they do well

Does she have a whelping box or do you just have her on the floor?

She really needs a whelping box with a pig rail installed and blankets should be flat not wrinkled up to avoid her squishing any pups. It's easy for a puppy to get caught in a fold of blanket and then sat on.

I'm hearing you Liss. Our last litter of 12 we were fortunate and had a natural delivery. But even then, when we went through our costs after most of the pups had left home we had not even broken even, vet fees, feeding fees etc etc etc.
Plus that doesn't account for the countless hours of effort and emtional drain! And our pups sold for 500 to 1000...

But that was at least expected, and the litter took three years of planning. I think I need another few to recover yet!!

It's not something that makes us money certainly. But throw into that the risks that it involves to bitch and pups and it becomes a big gamble indeed!

I'm really, really glad Tip is ok and you and your vet were switched on. Many people simply wouldn't (or couldn't!) pay that much. You obviously love your girl deeply and will be by her side for thennext few weeks while the monsters grow.

They get to be lots of fun in a few weeks... I hope you have some time to spare as you'll no doubt waste lots of it on them!!

Liss, thanks for taking what I meant the right way.
May I suggest you edit your first post to say what page the birth starts as this is a pretty long thread?

I have fingers crossed for Mum, pups and you.

Off to the vet in the morning have questions that I need answers for.... Or do I just bombard u guys some might sound silly but I would prefer to ask rather than not and do something that's not right..
I'm feeding pups every 2 hours cause they r hungry they all stay on her inbetween Feeds, can I overfed them? Most drink about 10-15 mls but I just had one drink 35ml it was one of the bigger ones.
And when I'm feeding some of them they have milk coming out their noses is that ok?
Also tips has not opened her bowels yet she's trying and wants to but just can't is this ok? Was going to ring vet in morning maybe she needs something to help move her bowels?
