They also pay a lot of money - well over $300 for "designer pups" or pups from pet shops.

People who buy from places other than a shelter or well researched (and I don't mean internet searches) breeder - don't know what they're doing, often fall in love with the dog and pay whatever.

People who want a GSP but don't do their research and aren't prepared to wait their turn with a reputable responsible breeder - will by a GSP puppy without papers that seems like a bargain.

There are some in the Trading post now for $500.

Burkes Backyard has them starting at $650 and that fact sheet is probably well out of date, I would imagine around $1000 would be closer to the mark for a GSP with papers from a breeder who does well at dog shows or gun dog trials.

Lollen I'd still contact the GSP club in your state. They would have the most idea on what to charge and may help with finding potential pet owners who just want a GSP because they know and like them and not because they want to show and breed.
I know that pups sell for but I thought we where talking what is fair price given the lack of history known about bloodlines etc.
I doubt the breed club will be that interested but their working dog club may help. These are unpapered, unhealth checked opps type litter which to me is worth no more than what it costs her to raise them.

Very true in most cases but I have been advised by a breed club to pts 4wk old pups as they where the wrong colour so they are some crazy's still out there.

I'm pretty sure thses days there are more that would do/say as you suggested though but there is still an odd few old school types & clubs out there.
But I think it is the young up & comers like yourself who will put a total stop to that type of attidudes whether they are behind the sences or not by just not turning a blind eye to it.

I'm glad to hear it Crested Love.

some of the stuff I hear and read elsewhere...

It used to be standard practice to drown unwanted puppies. Glad that's changed too.

PS - how would you get in touch with the working dog GSP club? Is there a separate one to the one at ANKC? Or do you go through the Gundog club?

I'm not sure but my brothers mate is a member of some working dog club that he takes his pointers to club meets at often.
I will ring & ask tonight when he gets home.

And the breed clubs as a whole are better these days but there is still some old types about.

Yes it's funny, white Boxers used to be drowned at birth, but now they are considered 'rare' and people pay a lot of money for them. Amazing how things change.

I would love to start a breed club here but with only 3 of us it wouldn't be much fun
